What Is Forward-Deployed Engineering?

The definition

Forward-deployed engineering (FDE) is a way of delivering software where an engineer embeds with the customer. Instead of building from a distance and handing over a spec, they work inside the customer's environment, learn how the business runs, and write the code, integrations and automations that solve real problems there.

Where it came from

The model was made famous by Palantir, which put engineers on site with customers to make complex data software work in messy real-world conditions. Today many AI companies use forward-deployed engineers to connect models and agents to customers' data, systems and workflows.

What a forward-deployed engineer does

  • Understands the business. Learns the workflows, data and constraints firsthand.
  • Builds in context. Writes software, integrations and AI agents against real problems.
  • Iterates quickly. Ships small, learns, adjusts, and ships again.
  • Owns outcomes. Is accountable for the thing working, not just for delivering a spec.

FDE vs other roles

  • Solutions engineer. Usually helps sell and configure a product. An FDE builds new capabilities.
  • Consultant. Advises. An FDE builds.
  • Agency. Builds to a spec and leaves. An FDE stays embedded and adapts.
  • Full-time hire. Joins your team permanently. FDE as a service gives you the model without recruiting a full team.

Forward-deployed engineering as a service

A new wave of providers offers FDE as a managed service: you get an embedded engineer without hiring one, often backed by a studio. Apprika's version is called Aurakil: an engineer embeds with your business and builds software, AI agents and automation, paid by fee or, for selected companies, by equity. We build it, you own it.

When it makes sense

  • You have real problems but not a complete specification.
  • Your workflows involve several systems and messy data.
  • You are adopting AI and need it connected safely to real systems.
  • You want working software every week, not a plan.

It is less suited to a fully specified, one-off project, where a traditional agency can be simpler.

Questions people ask

What is a forward-deployed engineer?

A software engineer who embeds with a customer, learns how their business works, and builds and operationalises software inside that environment.

Is forward-deployed engineering the same as consulting?

No. Consultants advise. Forward-deployed engineers build and ship working software.

Where did forward-deployed engineering start?

It was popularised by Palantir and is now widely used by AI companies deploying software inside customer organisations.

Can I get forward-deployed engineering as a service?

Yes. Apprika offers it as Aurakil, billed by fee or, for selected companies, by equity under a written agreement.
