What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer? And Does Your Business Need One?
Most AI projects don't fail in the lab. They fail in the hallway.
What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer? And Does Your Business Need One?

The plain definition
The demo works. Everyone nods. Then it meets the real business: the spreadsheet only Linda understands, the old system with no API, the customer who always calls with the weird question. The project stalls. Six months later, nobody uses it.
A forward deployed engineer exists to stop that.
A forward deployed engineer, or FDE, is a software engineer who works inside your business instead of from a distance. They sit with your team, learn how work really gets done, and build AI and software into those workflows. Not in theory. In your tools, with your data, on your deadlines.
The idea was made famous by a few large tech firms that sent engineers to live with their biggest clients. Today, AI labs and studios use the same model, because AI only pays off when it's wired into daily work.
What an FDE actually does
- Watches first. Shadows your staff for days, not hours. Finds where time and money leak.
- Builds on site. Connects AI to your CRM, inbox, phone line or files. Ships small wins in weeks.
- Tests with real users. Your team tries it Monday. The FDE fixes it Tuesday.
- Leaves you stronger. Documents everything and trains your people so you aren't stuck with a black box.
Why we started offering it
Honest version: because we know our blind spot.
We've spent fifteen years building consumer apps. Over 50 shipped, about 931,000 downloads, nearly all organic. We know how real people use software when nobody is there to explain it.
What we lacked was time inside other companies. Skolr, an education platform, is our first B2B contract. Going in, we assumed we understood school operations. We didn't. Every week on the ground taught us something a requirements document never would.
That's the whole case for an FDE. You can't build good tools for a business you've only read about.
So instead of hiding our inexperience, we built a service around fixing it. We send engineers in, we learn your business from the inside, and we build from there.
When you need an FDE
- You've tried AI tools and staff quietly went back to the old way.
- Your processes live in people's heads, not in documents.
- You have old systems that need to talk to new ones.
- You want results in weeks, not a 40-page strategy deck.
When you don't
- You need one simple app with a clear spec. Hire a studio for a fixed project instead.
- You want a chatbot on your website and nothing more. Off-the-shelf tools may do.
- Nobody on your team has time to work with the engineer. An FDE needs access to people to be useful.
We'd rather tell you that up front than sell you something you don't need.
How Apprika Labs runs FDE engagements
- Week 1: our engineer joins your team, on site or remote, and maps your workflows.
- Weeks 2 to 6: we ship the first working tool into daily use and measure time saved.
- After: we expand what works, cut what doesn't, and train your team to run it.
We're based in Canada, we work in English and French, and we design with PIPEDA and Québec's Law 25 in mind.
We're new to this market. We'll make mistakes. The difference is that we'll make them next to you, fix them fast and tell you plainly what happened.
Questions people ask
What does FDE stand for?
Forward deployed engineer: a software engineer who works embedded in a client's team to build and deploy technology into real workflows.
Is an FDE a consultant?
Not quite. A consultant advises. An FDE writes and ships the code.
How long is an FDE engagement?
Most run from 6 weeks to several months, depending on scope.
Can an FDE work remotely?
Yes, though some time on site in the first weeks helps a lot.
